Love People but Judge Their Ideas

All people are equal, but all ideas are not. If we treat ideas the way we are to treat people we will harm people. Truth is not indigenous to people, it is revealed from God. When God brought the Hebrew people group out of Egypt to make them a nation, they did not already know how to be a nation. They only learned how to be slaves from the Egyptians. God gave Moses the law to teach the people how to become a great nation in the promised land. The foundational teachings of nationhood come from Mount Sinai. God had to get Egypt out of them, and the covenant way of life into them.

We do not hear God telling the people to keep the ways of Egypt or any other land. Today we have elevated ideas to the status of the people who have them. Because of the abuses of colonialism and our modern judgment of them, we have retreated significantly from discipling nations in truth. In so doing, we consign cultures to darkness while trying to deliver individual people unto salvation in Jesus Christ.

Moreover, we embrace the cultural ideas of foreign lands serving foreign gods into our own nation. We go beyond the freedom of religion, to Continue reading “Love People but Judge Their Ideas”

Worldview Development, Part 3

Truth does not change, but our worldview should. If our worldview is not changing, we are not maturing in our knowledge of the truth.

Repentance is changing the way you think to line up with or turn around to truth. Practicing repentance changes our worldview. Thus, our worldview ought to be changing as we mature. If we still think the exact same way we did a few years ago, we are not practicing repentance.

When we learn something new it does not necessarily fit in to our worldview like a missing puzzle piece. We may have the wrong piece already wedged into that slot. We already thought something about the subject and either intentionally or unintentionally placed a bad piece into our puzzle. Continue reading “Worldview Development, Part 3”

Theology Is For You

theologyJust because we believe in Jesus, does not automatically mean that we think like Jesus. We believe in Truth, we also need to think with truth.

Theology is not for the intellectual professors and theologians. It’s not for the people who like to read thick books. It is for every Christian. It is for every area of life. The way you think is the way that you go.

Theology is thought about God and life that has been carefully constructed by aid of revelation, nature, and reason. Good theology should be in line with the Bible (revelation), science (nature), and clear right thinking (reason). Continue reading “Theology Is For You”

Rekindling Hope in a Dark World

light-of-the-worldThe Western world has run amok, but I am not going to react to it. We have all heard of the violent acts in Florida, Dallas, France, Baton Rouge, Germany, and now Florida again.

The best thing I can do in response is to stay the course that God has called me to travel. I will continue teaching people to honor those in authority and to respect all people regardless of race, class, gender, or religion. I will not become reactive, distracted, or intolerable in response to current events.

Before the families have been notified, social media surges with political opinions and demands. We can denounce such violence all we want, but it will not stop it.

Frankly, I am more concerned with the responses and lives of Christians in this nation than I am the damage wrought by terrorism. Continue reading “Rekindling Hope in a Dark World”

Thinking that leads to Repentance

fe1bc295-65ce-4931-81e4-bbec4c63baf1I once thought along hard lines. If you pushed against one of those lines, I pushed back. If your thinking did not fit inside my lines, it was wrong and you were wrong. I believed in absolute truth. There was no margin for error. If my truth was in error, I was in error, and maybe all of Christendom. I had to hold the fort and hold it I did.

I admired the sharp lines of my thinking. I sought to perfect those lines with study. I read all that supported my thinking and nothing that would threaten it. Then one day I ran into people. These people became my friends. And these friends thought differently than me. These friends were good strong Christians, yet they did not see the world the same as I. Why Are We All Arguing?

cookie-cutterIf we all thought the same way, we would be in trouble. When we are free to think for ourselves, we are free to think poorly as well as rightly. We are free to think sideways, backwards, or not at all. If we are not free to think worse, we are not free to think better.

When I watch debates raging across social media, I think we have all gone mad. We seldom debate to reach truth. We debate to dominate and stamp out the opposition. I’m free to share my opinion, but your opinion should not exist. This is proven when we are angry at someone for saying something we interpret as stupid. Continue reading “Why Are We All Arguing?”

Thinking about Donald Trump

downloadDonald Trump invokes a plethora of different responses from the public. I believe one could write a good article on why Donald Trump should not be elected President. I also believe one could write a good article on why he should be elected President. This article is neither. I am writing this article because of the lack of thought behind almost every post I read where Trump is concerned. (There are a few great voices making some great points for or against Trump). Government is Good

GovernmentNEW_2In the world of American politics, it can be as dangerous to go too far right as it can be to go too far to the left. When any system becomes corrupt and ineffective in its current state, it becomes in danger of being mistaken for a bad system.

We do this in all areas of life. We have bad church experiences so we separate from the organization as a whole. We have bad marriage experiences, so we distance ourselves from the institution of marriage. So naturally when we have bad experiences with government, we begin to wonder if government is the problem.

While there are times that a system itself is the problem, it is more often the case that the people in the system are the problem. But here we often make the mistake in thinking that different people will correct the problem. We practice this thinking when we leave the people who hurt us in one church to find a new church where people will behave more like proper Christians. We do this when we leave one marriage to find a better spouse who will make a better marriage. We do this when we think that replacing those in government with new people will result in a better government. We do this when we think that removing government altogether would be an even better solution.

The problem is not that the system is broken. The problem is that the culture is broken. Continue reading “Government is Good”

Building Your Worldview Truth By Truth

edifice2Worldviews are like edifices. They are a structure of thoughts built into our minds. We look out at the world through the windows of this structure. Our visibility corresponds to the strength or weakness of our structure in relation to what is true. We will see reality more accurately the more our structure is aligned with truth and less accurately the more the structure errs.

23002525484_dca668d869_bOur structure has many rooms designed by experience, assumptions, and what we have gleaned learning from others either on purpose or by mindless absorption. To use a Star Trek reference it is like a Borg Ship, where we have assimilated ideas that we have come in contact with throughout the years of our life. We are all assimilating the data into our mental structure whether we do it on purpose or not. Very few think about the structure that is being built. We think with it all the time, but never about it. Very few people know there is a thought structure inside the mind.   Continue reading “Building Your Worldview Truth By Truth”
